Old School Bell Memorial

The Smithfield Elementary School Bell resting in Quaker Cemetery has received a much deserved facelift over the summer.  Originally, the heavy iron bell was installed in 1906, in the round cupola of Smithfield Elementary School, located on High Street. The bell was damaged by a wind storm in 1953 and taken down.     The Smithfield Lions eventually moved the bell to Camp Smilio. It stood by the clubhouse overlooking the lake until Smithfield Elementary was built on Hill Street. When the elementary school closed, the bell was moved by volunteers to the current resting place, Quaker Cemetery.
A higher foundation was constructed a few years ago, but this summer a fresh coat of paint on the bell and a decorative concrete applied to the base enhanced the cherished bell. The Friends of Smithfield funded the work.

Friends of Smithfield –  Board of Directors meetings will be via conference calls

Although regular activities have been suspended for the year at the Smithfield Historical
Society, some improvements to the building and garage were made over the summer.
Thanks to a Pugliese Charitable Foundation grant, a new bathroom was installed, updates were
made to the kitchen, and a new roof and paint job on the garage were completed.
Regular activities are set to resume in spring of 2021.

Pugliese Charitable Foundation grant

A new roof and much needed building repairs were made to the Smithfield Volunteer Fire
Department building thanks to a Pugliese Charitable Foundation grant received by the Friends
of Smithfield on behalf of the fire department.
SVFD Trustee Robert Kendle and FOS grant writer Linda Kovach coordinated the project.
