Smithfield Township Inclement Weather Procedures

Smithfield Township covers over 37 square miles and
maintains 51 miles of road. The township has three employees,
that during inclement weather are in plow trucks, performing
various duties throughout the day. Following is a description of
the typical protocol followed during the winter months.
Township employees start plowing at 6:00 a.m. and will work
until all township roads are plowed or treated. Some variations
on start time occur depending on impending weather.
During a snow event: asphalt roads will be plowed and
treated with a salt and limestone mixture, gravel and chip/seal
roads will not be plowed with snow accumulation under 1.5
inches of snow but will treated with limestone. Please note,
gravel and chip/seal roads require 1.5 inches of accumulation
to be plowed.
Plow route and priorities are as follows:
-Bus routes
-Primary roads
-Side roads and alleys
-Emergency vehicle needs will take priority over all routes.

Maintaining and keeping our roads clear and safe is a primary
concern for the township. Each employee has a specific route
for safety and efficiency. The routes will be followed each time
plowing is performed and should give the residents a basic
expectation as to when their road with be cleared. Routes will
not be deviated from unless there is an emergency or
equipment failure.
Plowing is a dangerous job, and we appreciate the work the
township employees do to keep our roads safe. If you have any
questions, you are encouraged to contact one of the Township
Trustees. Township information can be found at
